题目: Involuntary Entrepreneurship – Evidence from Thai Urban Data

摘要:This paper structurally estimates a model of occupational choice between entrepreneurial and nonentrepreneurial alternatives. Involuntary entrepreneurship arises for agents who would earn higher income in the non-entrepreneurial occupation (e.g., wage work) but cannot access, with some probability, due to a labor market friction. This paper estimates the model via GMM using Thai urban data and finds that approximately 17% of all business households are classified as involuntary entrepreneurs. Using the estimated model to quantify and disentangle the misallocations in occupational choice and investment from labor and credit market constraints, the results imply 11% excess (involuntary) entrepreneurs relative to the first best because of the labor market constraint and 1.5% less entrepreneurs because of the credit constraint. This paper also evaluates the effects of relaxing the labor and credit constraints and the impact of a microfinance policy on total and involuntary entrepreneurship and on household income, on average and stratified by wealth and schooling. The results suggest large potential income gains for poorer households.
