Title:  Do Subways Reduce Congestion? Evidence from US Cities

Abstract: This paper investigates the effect of subway transit on vehicle miles traveled (VMT) on highways in the US. Both event-study analysis and a simultaneous equation model are used to analyze a panel dataset that tracks city-level expansions of subway and road systems from 1991 to 2014. Empirical estimates indicate that subway expansions significantly reduce highway traffic. A 10 percent expansion in subway length reduces traffic on interstate highways by 0.8 percent. There exist heterogeneous effects on different types of highways, as adding 10 percent more subways decrease traffic on radial highways and ring highways by 1.9 and 0.6 percent, respectively. Subway traffic is found to increase by about 3.5 percent for the 10 percent subway expansion. This paper indicates that subway transit can be an effective measure to mitigate traffic congestion, especially for roads that share similar topology with subway networks.

讲座人简介:逄金栋,现为武汉大学经济与管理学院助理教授,于2018年毕业于美国Syracuse University,获得经济学博士学位。其主要研究方向为城市与区域经济学、交通、房地产经济学等。已在著名国际学术期刊 Journal of Applied Econometrics,  Reginal Science and Urban Economics发表论文。
