Title: An Information Search Perspective of Financial Advice-Seeking and Financial Management Behavior

Abstract: This study aims to establish a financial management behavior framework to analyze multiple information sources that individuals and households rely on when making complicated financial decisions. Using an information search perspective, the influential factors and positive and negative outcomes of retrieving internal information sources and seeking external professional help are included in the framework of this study. This study uses the 2012 National Financial Capability Study dataset and structural equation modeling methodology to examine the relationships among information sources (internal and external) and behavioral outcomes. Results of this study suggest that 1) seeking financial advice was positively associated with desired financial outcomes and negatively associated with risky financial outcomes; 2) the financial help-seeking behavior mediated the relationships between internal information sources and financial behavioral outcomes; and 3) the direct and indirect influences of internal information sources and the mediating effect of financial advice-seeking behavior varied by gender and age groups. The findings from this study provide practical implications for scholars of personal financial planning, financial advisors and educators, and policy makers.
