报告题目:Teacher Characteristics and Student Performance: Evidence from Random Teacher-Student Assignments in China

摘要:This article investigates the impact of teacher characteristics on student performance in middle school education using a randomly-assigned teacher-student sample in China. We show that senior and female teachers with management responsibility (i.e., homeroom teachers) effectively improve student cognitive and non-cognitive skills. We further examine the mechanisms and show that senior homeroom teachers inspire student motivation and positive behaviors, boost the classroom atmosphere, and get parents more involved. Meanwhile, female homeroom teachers benefit student skills by motivating students and interacting with parents more frequently. Our findings highlight the role of teachers in class management.

报告人简介:黄炜,新加坡国立大学校长特聘助理教授,曾任美国国家经济研究局(NBER)博士后研究员。于二零一六年获得哈佛大学经济学博士学位,于二零一一年获得北京大学国家发展学院经济学硕士学位,于二零零八年获得北京大学物理学院物理学学士学位。他的研究领域是公共经济学,劳动经济学和卫生经济学。他的研究兴趣在健康,教育,种族和中国等领域。他的研究成果已发表于Review of Economic and Statistics, Journal of Labor Economics, American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Nature, Journal of Economic Perspectives, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Social Science & Medicine, 管理世界,经济学季刊,等学术刊物上。现任Economics of Transition的联合主编。
