讲座题目: Contesting fake news
讲座摘要:
This paper introduces a novel type of contest which endogenizes the degree of discrimination its underlying relative ranking is based on. As an application, we propose a simple theory of labeling for credence or experience goods of differing qualities. We model the competition for a label signaling high quality as a rank order tournament in which asymmetric firms can jointly control the underlying ranking's precision through the release of individual information. While the labels and the information they are based on can be seen as a public good guiding the consumers' purchasing decisions, individual firms may have incentives to strategically amplify or counteract the competitors' information emission, thereby manipulating the label-ranking's discriminatory power. Elements of the introduced theory seem to be applicable to several industries which employ rankings including academic departments, books, movies, music, and investment opportunities.
主讲人简介:
Paul Schweinzer is an applied economic theorist working mainly on topics involving game theory, contract theory, and mechanism design.  He was a 2020 Fulbright scholar at the University of Minnesota before returning to his chair of microeconomic theory at University of Klagenfurt in Austria.  Paul is co-editor of the Journal of Mechanism and Institution Design and has recently published in the (Journal of) Economic Theory, International Journal of Game Theory, and Games and Economic Behavior.
