讲座题目：Transcontinental Railway and Hinterland Development

讲座摘要：This paper estimates the impact of transcontinental railways on inland region’s trade, production, and inter-regional factor flows. Since 2011, cities in China and Europe are increasingly connected through China-Europe Railway Express, a transcontinental transportation network linking China with western Europe through Central Asia and Russia. Exploiting the staggered introduction of the network across inland rail stations in China, we find that the network increases inland trade to Europe, manufacturing production, and incentivizes reallocation of capital and labor from coast to inland. Transcontinental railways therefore contribute to the development of inland region, which tends to be less populated and less developed owing to its longer distance to coastline and higher international trade cost for ocean-borne cargos.

曹思未，北京师范大学经济与工商管理学院副教授，毕业于加州大学伯克利分校，研究兴趣集中在创新经济学和区域经济学。曾在Journal of Regional Science，《经济研究》，《世界经济》等刊物发表。
