讲座题目：Information Sharing and Differentiated Treatments

讲座摘要：A platform’s operating format may influence how it uses rich data generated in its marketplace. A dual-role platform that directly sells products in its marketplace may privately use the information to improve its own product yet withhold it from other sellers. This differentiated treatment raises regulatory concerns and is prohibited by law in the European Union. In this paper, we develop a simple game theoretical model to study the platform's information-sharing strategy under different operating formats. We find that a single-role （dual-role） platform shares high-value information only with the strong seller （itself） but grants all sellers access to low-value information. Furthermore, a regulation that prohibits the differentiated treatment of information sharing may backfire: the single-role （dual-role） platform can strategically respond by switching from sharing information with the strong seller （itself） to not sharing information at all, which harms the platform and consumers.
