讲座题目:The Effects of Immigrants on Trade Flows: An Canadian Industry-Level Analysis
讲座摘要:We examine the effects of Canadian immigrants on Canada’s import and export flows. Our analysis is conducted at the partner-industry-year level for a period of 32 years from 1988 to 2019, a fast-growing period for both Canada’s trade and immigration. Our findings indicate that immigrants are influential in facilitating import flows from their origin countries to Canada, but no clear relationship of this kind is found for exports. Immigrants from developing countries are the driving force in obtaining the results, given the greater needs for immigrants to reduce information barriers. For manufacturing industries, immigrants promote both export and import flows, but the magnitude for imports is much larger than for exports. Our results indicate that there is heterogeneity in immigrants’ role: economic-class immigrants and immigrants with a post-secondary degree generate large effects on import flows, in addition to the average effects. Immigrants with post-secondary education also have a positive influence on exports from the industry in which they are employed. Our results are robust with counterfactual measures of immigration employment, and persistent with lagged immigration measures.
