讲座题目：Proctor Gender and Female Performance in High-Stakes Exams

讲座摘要：Gatekeepers’ identity is often thought to matter because of the biased discretion they exercise. This paper asks whether even passive gatekeepers – those with no direct discretion – can nonetheless shape outcomes through their mere presence. We study China’s National College Entrance Examination, where students and proctors are randomly assigned to test rooms. Using administrative data covering the full population of 10,500 high school graduates in a representative county （2022 - 2024）, we identify causal effects of proctor gender by comparing classmates assigned to different proctors and each student’s performance across subjects. The presence of a male chief proctor lowers female students’ STEM scores by six points, with no effect on non-STEM subjects or on male students. Repeated exposure to male proctors in STEM exams compounds these effects, reducing total scores and college admission chances. Collectively, our findings highlight that even without discretion or evaluative power, the identity of gatekeepers can operate as a situational cue, affecting performance and reinforcing inequality in access to opportunity.
